Themed Comitted to a Greener Planet, the Waste Management Europe Conference took place from 21.06. to 23.06.2022 in Bergamo, Italy. IU together with FLAG, Albania and SEHLHOFF, Germany presented results of the project “Integrated Solid Waste Management in the Berat Region” funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO. Within this framework, a study tour was conducted. In this project, IU supports the municipal and regional actors in municipal solid waste management in the Berat region in implementing the national waste management strategy and EU directives.
A total of 20 people took part in the trip, including representatives of the municipal council of Dimal, as well as employees of the municipality, experts of the project team and the mayor. At the conference, the project was presented by Alba Dakoli Wilson, the deputy team leader, with the speech “A national challenge with local solutions: Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) in the Berat Region“. The presentation dealt with the institutional and organisational requirements for successful projects, the involvement of the community and the public, and the measures implemented in the context of local conditions.
In addition to the conference, an extensive programme was organised for the participants of the study tour. In addition to visits to the Stazione ITS Guissago, an intelligent waste transfer station with mechanical-biological waste treatment and landfill, and the Muggiano Sorting Plant, a plastic sorting plant near Milan, the conference exhibition in Bergamo was visited, where the participating companies presented their projects and services. Visits to the cities of Bergamo and Milan rounded off the programme.
